Data for Student Success

Data for Student Success is focused on building a culture of quality data in schools. Since 2004, Calhoun ISD has been helping schools build a culture of quality data by providing focused professional development that promotes professional learning communities around using data for school improvement.

In 2007, Calhoun ISD, in partnership with Shiawassee RESD and Macomb ISD, was awarded the Title II D Category III K-12 Data Management grant for the Data for Student Success project in partnership with the Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI). The focus of the grant is the process of building a culture of data, which has a major emphasis on professional development. As part of the professional development, each ISD has helped to develop a web based data inquiry tool that supplements each ISDs local data warehousing tool.

These three ISDs have spent the first funding year focused on:

  •  Identifying the CEPI data sets and associated data elements necessary to inform school improvement planning.
  • Establishing a data exchange process between this project and CEPI data sets.
  • Using the data mining framework to identify key dynamic inquiries to inform instruction and school improvement.
  • Creating several web-based dynamic inquiries using a core of student demographic data as well as longitudinal data (cohort, special pop, etc.) including user training, support and user documentation.
  • Enhancing local data warehouse solutions through providing access to more data.
  • Establishing Professional Learning Community (PLC) discussions around student achievement, teacher practice and strategies as well as curriculum alignment (using local and state-level data).
  • Identifying action plans and teacher strategies that will lead to student achievement given the data provided to inform such practices.
  • Delivering Professional Development activities, customized for each participating ISD, to constituent school districts related to cultures of quality data.
  • Developing “wrap around” professional development to complement dynamic inquiries.
