Advanced and Accelerated

Academically Talented Youth Program (ATYP)

ATYP is for highly gifted, qualified students in grades 7-9.  This program provides these students with a radically accelerated curriculum of mathematics or reading and writing that is appropriate for their extreme capabilities.  Students qualify for the program by

  • Scoring at the 95th percentile on a nationally-normed test(preferred)
  • Scoring at a high level on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) in English Language Arts
  • A referral by an adult

Students then take either the

  • SAT (preferred)
  • ACT, usually in grades 6 or 7, through the Midwest Academic Talent Search (see below) or on their own

Students scoring at a very high level will qualify to participate in ATYP at Western Michigan University, at the Kalamazoo or Battle Creek campuses during the following school year.

Midwest Academic Talent Search (MATS)

MATS is a program that offers above-grade-level testing to bright students.  MATS provides students and parents with valuable assessment and counseling tools that will enable them to make wise academic decisions about course selections and paths to choose.

Registration for the 2007-2008 school year will be available in September at MATS Online.
